Week 39: World of Computers

Updated: Apr 25, 2022

"No gift is more precious than trust."

Computers have revolutionized the world, and they are constantly evolving. While some parts have stayed the same, much has changed, even if there are those who may not want the advancements to come. In this week's Tuesday Fix we are going to explore 3 very different areas of the computer world. The first will be on the history of the keyboard, the second on a new chip that may change how computers work, and the final video about refurbishing computers and the subsequent copyright laws.

1. How QWERTY conquered keyboards: "If you've ever been curious about typewriter history, the rise of QWERTY wasn't an accident. Typing and typewriters weren't always around, and the inventor of the QWERTY typewriter layout didn't know it would become the standard."

2. How Apple Just Changed the Entire Industry: For those who have both a smartphone and a home computer/laptop, you may have noticed the subtle differences in how similar apps work on your phone versus your computer. However, Apple has developed a chip that works like the one in your phone, but is powerful enough to run an laptop.

3. Counterfeiting Microsoft Windows Restore CDs Landed Me in Prison: "In 2012, while living in China, longtime e-waste recycler Eric Lundgren manufactured 28,000 PC restore discs to be used in refurbished computers sold in the United States. The shipment of discs, exact copies of Dell-branded Microsoft Windows CDs, immediately raised suspicions with U.S. Customs officers, beginning a chain of events that would alter Lundgren’s life for the next seven years."

Call to Action! Computers are going to constantly change and evolve, and will continue to change the world with it. If you are interested in using computers to change the world, the best time is to start now, as everything is always advancing in this realm, and it becomes easier each and every day to learn how to use one!
